A moraine is a long heap of earth, sand, and broken rock that a glacier has pushed along and then dropped. Ice is a slow bulldozer: it tears bits off the mountain, carries them, and when the ice melts or pauses, it leaves that rubbish in a line or a ridge. You can get a ridge at the snout of the glacier, or along its sides. From a distance it can look like a low, messy hill, not like neat layers of rock. and in cold mountains use the word; it is a school-science term, but the picture is simple — the glacier's leftover pile. Though actually, the name is not about more rain.
