To mope is to sit around feeling sorry for yourself and doing nothing about it. You are sad or sulky, and you let it show — you drag your feet, you stare at the wall, you will not be cheered up. It is informal, and it can sound a little impatient: a parent saying don't just mope means stop sitting there with that face and do something. You can mope about a breakup, about the rain, about missing a trip. It is not the careful word doctors use for deep sadness; it is the everyday picture of someone who has gone quiet and heavy and will not try. There is also a noun, a mope, for a person who lives like that, but the verb is the one you will hear. Though actually, moping is not the same as being tired, and it is not the same as grieving — it has that extra flavour of refusing to budge.

組成Late Middle English first had a noun mope meaning a simpleton or fool, probably tied to mop in an old sense “young of an animal, little child.” Another path, and scholars are not sure which is right, goes through North Germanic — Swedish mopa “to sulk,” Danish måbe — themselves from Low German mopen “to make faces, gape,” maybe from an old word for a protruding lip, a pout. The sulky face is the picture either way.
