When something is monumentally bad, stupid, boring, or unfair, it is so to a huge degree — as if the badness were as big as a stone monument. Speakers almost always pair it with a negative word: monumentally stupid, a monumentally bad idea, monumentally late. You can find monumentally successful in writing, but to many ears that sounds a little odd or , because the word has drifted toward “huge in a disastrous way.” It is stronger than very, a bit more dramatic than extremely, and it belongs more to careful writing and news than to everyday chat. Though actually, the tidy idea “it just means extremely” is tidier than the habit: people stretch it for emphasis, but they rarely stretch it toward praise.
