Montserrat is a small island in the Caribbean Sea, in the Leeward Islands. It belongs to the United Kingdom, not to a nearby independent country. Books still name Plymouth as the capital. Though actually a volcano (Soufrière Hills) began in the 1990s, and in 1997 lava and ash hit a wide area; many people had to leave, and Plymouth is now largely empty — a capital on paper more than a living town. People who stayed moved to the north of the island. The name is also used for a famous mountain and monastery in Catalonia, Spain; that is a different Montserrat. This entry is the Caribbean island.
