Montmartre is a hill and a neighbourhood in the north of Paris. It is famous for the big white church of Sacré-Cœur on top, and for bars, restaurants and nightclubs — including the Moulin Rouge, where the 19th-century artist Toulouse-Lautrec painted dancers and singers. In the late 1800s and early 1900s many artists lived and worked there. Now it is very popular with tourists, so the old “poor artists on a hill” picture is only half the truth: you still feel the art history, but you also get crowds, souvenirs and evening shows. People say it in a French way, roughly mon-MAR-truh, not mont-mart.
