It is a real working city, not a huge famous one like New York, so you meet it most often in geography lists and American news. Though actually the same spelling is also a common family name, and other towns are called Montgomery too — if the sentence is about “the capital of Alabama,” it is this city. In American English the middle part sounds like gum: mont-GUM-uh-ree.
