Montezuma is the name English books usually give to the Aztec emperor of Mexico who met the Spanish, Cortés, in the early 1500s (about 1466–1520). You will also see Moctezuma, which sits closer to his own language. People often call him “the last Aztec ruler.” That is a bit tidy: he was the emperor when the Spanish arrived, but after he died other Aztec leaders still tried to fight. The usual story is that the Spanish held him as a prisoner, and that his own people later killed him. Scholars are not all sure who struck the blow; it is a messy time, and the Spanish wrote a lot of the story. In class the name is mostly history. In everyday English people sometimes stretch it into the joke Montezuma’s revenge, meaning a bad stomach when you travel — that is the name being used loosely, not a fact about the man.
組成From Classical Nahuatl Motēuczōma, literally “he frowns like a lord.” English got the name through Spanish, which is why Montezuma and Moctezuma both appear.
