1. 1

Monterrey is a large industrial city in northeast Mexico. It is the country's most important centre for making steel, and a hub for factories and business. The name comes from 'the king's mountain' (a mountain plus a king). Spanish speakers say it with a strong r: something like mon-teh-RRAY, and the English spelling keeps two r's. That last point matters, because the United States has a coastal city called Monterey, in California, with only one r. They share an old Spanish name, but they are not the same place: Monterrey (two r's) is the Mexican steel city.
