Montenegro is a small country in southeast Europe, between Serbia and the Adriatic Sea. People know it for a steep coast and a dark mountain inland. The name means black mountain: Venetian speakers said monte (mountain) + negro (black), copying the local name Crna Gora, which means the same thing and points to Mount Lovćen. It used to belong to Yugoslavia, a larger country in that part of Europe that later broke apart. After that, Montenegro stayed joined with Serbia until it became fully independent in 2006. The capital is Podgorica. Only about 650,000 people lived there in 2014 — a small country with a long name.
