A monsoon is a strong seasonal wind, and the word is now mostly used for the very heavy rain that comes with it — especially in South and Southeast Asia, where one part of the year is dry and another part brings weeks of constant, heavy rain. People often just say 'the monsoon' to mean that whole rainy season.
