Monrovia is the capital of Liberia, a country on the west coast of Africa. It is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean: ships come in and out with goods, and a large share of the country's trade passes through it. The city was named after James Monroe, a president of the United States. In the 1800s, people from America — many of them formerly enslaved — were sent to settle in that part of Africa, and the new capital took his name. English speakers usually say it mon-ROH-vee-uh. It is Liberia's main city for government and business, not a city in the United States, even though an American president sits inside the name.
