    A monoplane is a plane with one wing on each side, on a single level. Early flying machines often had two sets of wings, one above the other; that is a biplane. Almost every passenger plane you see today is a monoplane. The word belongs to history and engineering more than to the airport queue — there people just say plane. It can sit in front of a noun as well: a monoplane design. Though actually, “one wing on each side” still means two wings in total. The mono- is about one wing-level, not a strange machine with a single wing like a bird missing a side.
