    A monogram is a small design made from the first letters of someone’s names, often drawn so the letters sit on top of each other or twist into one picture. People put monograms on towels, shirts, bags, writing paper, and silver — a way of marking “this is mine” without writing the whole name. Anna Lin might have a monogram of A and L. It is not a signature (that is your name written by hand), and it is not automatically a company logo, though some brands make their logo look like a monogram. The word is also a verb: to monogram a shirt is to stitch or print that letter-design onto it. You meet it in fashion, gifts, and slightly fancy homes more than in . Though actually, the older Greek idea behind the pieces was “drawn with single lines,” not “one letter”; English later used it for a design of letters, and people now also read it as mono- (one) + -gram (writing).
