A moniker is a name you use for a person or a thing that is not the official name. It sits close to nickname, but it often feels more playful, a little old, and slightly funny on purpose. A singer might choose a moniker so the stage name is not the name on a passport. A city can have a moniker too — a fond or label people repeat. You would not write a moniker on a school form or a bank card; those want the real name. Though actually, in some circles the moniker sticks so hard that almost nobody uses the legal name any more, and that is part of the joke: the made-up name has won.

People have guessed it might be backslang from ekename (the old word behind nickname), or from Shelta munik, or from monk, or a twisting of monogram, or even from monarch in the sense “number one — me.” A London paper in 1857 joked that it had an “Egyptian” sound. None of these is proven, so the honest story is: origin unknown.
