Monaco is a very small country on the Mediterranean Sea, squeezed between France and Italy. It is a principality: a prince, not a king, is the head of the country. Only a few tens of thousands of people live there, but it is famous far beyond its size. Rich people from other countries often choose to live there because taxes are very low. The best-known town inside it is Monte Carlo, with its casino and a famous car race. People from Monaco are called Monégasques. On a map it can look like a tiny piece of the French coast, and in some ways it behaves like one, but it is its own country.
摩納哥
組成The name comes from Ancient Greek Mónoikos. That older name itself is of unknown origin (it may be Ligurian, an old local language). Later, people linked the place with Hercules, who had a temple there, and said the name meant he who dwells alone, as if from Greek mónos (alone) and oikeō (to live in a place). That story is old; it is not a sure origin.
