A mom-and-pop business is a small shop or company run by a family, often a husband and wife, not a big chain. A mom-and-pop grocery, bakery, or is local, personal, and usually small. The phrase is American and a bit warm and old-fashioned: news stories use it when a huge supermarket pushes out little shops, or when people praise a place that still feels like home. You use it as an adjective before the business (a mom-and-pop store). It does not mean “parents” by itself, and it is not the usual word in British English, where family-run or corner shop does the job. In Taiwan the idea is very familiar; the English just dresses it in American family words.
