1. 1

Molybdenum is a hard, silver-white metal. On the science list of elements its symbol is Mo. You will not buy a lump of it in a shop; it lives in labs, factories, and steel. People add a little to steel so the steel stays strong at high heat and does not wear or rust as easily — so it turns up in tools, engines, and . The name is from a Greek word for lead, because the ore looked like lead; though actually it is not lead at all, and chemists gave it its own name in the late 1700s. In English it is a technical word. Say it slowly: mə-LIB-də-nəm.

組成From New Latin molybdaenum, from molybdaena (lead-like minerals), from Greek molúbdaina “a piece of lead,” from mólubdos “lead.” Scholars trace that Greek word to an older word meaning “dark.” Chemists added -um, the ending many element names take. English has used the name since the late 1700s.

    • Thus in M₄O₁₁, for example, ¾ of the molybdenums are octahedrally connected and ¼ are tetrahedrally coordinated and, furthermore, the formula is compatible with the existence of one Mo(IV) for every three Mo(VI), so at first glance the compound might appear to be a class I mixed valence system.
