Moloch is a god named in the Old Testament of the Bible. In those stories, some ancient peoples are said to have killed children as a sacrifice to him. It is a heavy name from religious history, not a word for the playground. Later writers stretch it: they call a cruel system Moloch when it seems to eat people, especially the young — war, a city, or money that demands a terrible price. That stretch is literary and dark; you will meet it in essays and poems more than in speech. Though actually, scholars still argue about the exact old rites, so the tidy school picture (“the god who ate children”) is tidier than the ancient evidence. In ordinary English the name is rare. It is not mole, and it is not a chemistry word. People who use it want you to feel horror, not to name an animal.
組成From Hebrew molokh, an Ammonite god mentioned in the Old Testament; further back, from Proto-Semitic *malk- (“king”). The figurative sense comes from those stories of child sacrifice.
