    A little French word meaning “me”. English borrows it as a joke. Someone says a rude thing about you, and you pretend to be shocked: “Selfish? Moi?” — as if it could not possibly be you. It is playful, a bit like onto a small stage for a second, often with a hand on the chest. You may see it in comics, captions, and posh-joking voices. You do not use it in serious English instead of me, and you do not write it in an essay as if it were a normal English pronoun. The whole point is the French costume.
