1. 1

The old English name for the religion of Islam, built like Christianity: earlier Mahometanism, coined in the 1600s after French mahométisme, and later also Muhammadanism. It is plus - — “the - of Mohammed”. That is the problem, only bigger. Muslims call their religion Islam, a word about giving yourself to God, and they do not name the faith after the Prophet in this way. English was copying its own habit (Christianity, Buddhism) and missed how Islam names itself. Use Islam. You will see Mohammedanism in older encyclopaedias and histories; treat it as a historical English label, not as the name to teach.

    「穆罕默德教」(舊稱,冒犯;現在說「伊斯蘭教」。中文舊稱「回教」)

Mohammedanismname

  • 1

Islam, the religion introduced by Muhammad.

    • In a general estimate of Mohammedanism it should not be forgotten what Islam has done for the cause of humanity and more particularly the share it had in the development of science and art in Europe. Broadly speaking, the Mohammedans may be said to have been the teachers of barbarous Europe from the ninth to the thirteenth century. It is from the days of the Abbasside rulers that the real renaissance of the Greek spirit and Greek culture is to be dated.
