Moderato is a music word. Written on a page of music, it tells you to play at a middle speed — not slow, not fast, a walking kind of pace. It comes from Italian, like many old music directions (the words for slow, fast, and very fast sit in the same family of marks). Players treat it as an instruction: play this moderato. It can also name a section that goes at that speed. You may see it stuck to another Italian speed word, meaning “this fast, but keep it in check.” It is a lesson-and-score word, not street talk. Though actually, “middle speed” is not a clock number. One group’s moderato can feel a bit quick to another. English already has moderate for the everyday idea of “in the middle”; musicians still keep the Italian word on the score. They are doublets: two words from the same older root that arrived by different paths.
