A grammar word describing 'modal verbs' — words like can, could, may, might, must, will, would, shall, and should, which show ability, possibility, permission, or necessity instead of a simple action. Outside grammar class, 'modal' also shows up in computers, where a 'modal window' is a small pop-up box you have to deal with before you can keep using the rest of the screen.
