A mobster is a member of an organised crime group — the kind films call “the mob” or the Mafia. It is informal, more American than British, and you meet it in crime films, TV, and news about gangs. It usually means someone inside that group, not just any thief. In careful news writing you may also see gangster or organised-crime member; mobster sounds a bit like the movies, and can feel a little old-fashioned, but people still use it. It is not a kind word and not a joke, except when someone is clearly playing with film language.
