MMOG stands for massively multiplayer online game. It is a game on the Internet that a huge number of people play at the same time, often hundreds or thousands, inside one shared world. That world does not pack itself away when you log off: it keeps running for hours and days, with other players still in it. A short match against a friend, or a game that ends the moment you close it, is not this. World of Warcraft is the example people point to; there are others for fighting, sport, or building. Gamers often say MMO for short. If the game is also about playing a character with a story and levels, they say MMORPG — that is one kind of MMOG, not a different spelling of the same thing.
