A mix-up is a mistake that leaves people confused about details or plans — the wrong time, the wrong bag, two names swapped on a list. Nobody is usually trying to trick anyone; the pieces were just put together wrong. You hear it at airports, hotels, restaurants, and schools. It is friendly, informal English. You can say a mix-up over the tickets or a mix-up with the booking. The verb is mix up: “I mixed up the dates.” As a noun, mix-up is the confused situation itself, not a cake mixture and not a music mix.
