Mitochondria are tiny structures found inside almost every cell in your body, and their job is to turn food and oxygen into usable energy for the cell - this is why they are often called 'the powerhouse of the cell,' a phrase famous from biology class. Cells that need lots of energy, like muscle cells, have many more mitochondria than cells that need less.
