Mismanagement is the noun for running something badly when you were the one in charge of it. It names either the behaviour itself or a whole period of it — the years of decisions, delays, and waste that left an organisation in a bad state.
Because it is a noun, it lets you make the problem the subject of the sentence and talk about it as a thing that can be blamed, investigated, and proved: "Mismanagement destroyed the company." "The collapse was the result of years of mismanagement." You will hear it after a failure, in the part where people are looking for the cause: financial mismanagement, gross mismanagement, systematic mismanagement, allegations of mismanagement.
Usually it is uncountable — mismanagement, not "a mismanagement" and not "mismanagements". It behaves like waste or neglect in that way.
It is formal, and it belongs to reports, court cases, news, and shareholder meetings. If your friend organises a trip badly you do not accuse them of mismanagement; you say they made a mess of it.
And like the verb it comes from, it charges rather than crime. This is exactly why it appears so often in the careful sentence "there is no evidence of fraud, but there was serious mismanagement" — the writer is saying nobody stole, and it was still very bad. Hold onto that pairing and you will always know where this word sits.
組成mis- + management. The prefix mis- means badly or wrongly; management is the act of running or controlling something. Management goes back through manage to Latin manus, a hand — so the underlying picture is a bad pair of hands on the reins.
