To misinform someone is to give them information that is not right. They walk away thinking they know, but they do not. Sometimes it is an honest mix-up: you had the wrong time, so you misinformed your friend. Sometimes it is careless: you passed on a rumour as if it were fact. The word itself does not always mean you meant to trick them. “Lie” is the blunt word for that, and “disinform” is the rarer, heavier one for a planned false story. Still, for the listener the result is the same: they now hold a wrong picture. It is a bit formal. In everyday talk people say “you told me wrong” or “that’s not right.” You misinform someone — a person is the object.
