A miserabilist is someone who seems to live inside unhappiness — not for one bad week, but as a habit of mind. They notice what is broken, expect things to go badly, and often make art or talk out of that grey mood. The word shows up most around singers and writers: critics use it for people whose songs or books keep returning to gloom, failure, rain, and not belonging. It can be a noun (he is a miserabilist) or a light adjective (miserabilist lyrics). It is not a school word and not a kind everyday word; it belongs to reviews, essays, and people who talk about culture. Though actually, it is not the same as being sad. A sad person feels bad; a miserabilist makes a style, even a job, out of the feeling that nothing is all right. Some wear the label with a half-smile.
