    This is a legal word, mostly used in the United States. A misdemeanor is a crime, but a fairly small, less serious one — like a cheap item or driving a little too fast. It's punished more lightly than a 'felony', which is a serious crime like robbery. Outside of law, you might rarely hear 'misdemeanor' used jokingly for a small, silly mistake, but that's not its main job.
