A very formal, old, and loaded word for when people of different have a sexual relationship or have children together. It was coined in 1864 in the United States, from Latin words for “mix” and “race,” in a that pretended to support mixing of but was in fact written to make white voters angry — especially at President Lincoln — by them with that idea. Later US laws used the word to ban marriage between Black and white people. Those laws are gone. Today many writers avoid the word because it carries that ugly legal history; they say interracial marriage or a mixed-race relationship instead. You will still meet it in history books, old laws, and academic writing. Treat it as a historical term, not as a casual label for a couple.
