If a woman who is going to have a baby has a miscarriage, the pregnancy ends by itself too early, before the baby is formed enough to live, and the baby dies. This is a medical word and also an everyday one; people speak about it more openly now than they used to. Most miscarriages happen in the first months, sometimes before a woman even knew for sure that she was pregnant. It is not the same as an abortion, which is a choice to end a pregnancy — the two get mixed up, and that mix-up can hurt. Doctors’ textbooks may say “spontaneous abortion”; ordinary people say miscarriage. Though actually, the same word still lives in the phrase “a miscarriage of justice,” when a court gets the result badly wrong. That is an older, wider sense: something that was not carried through as it should have been. The baby sense is the one people hear first today.
