A misapprehension is a mistaken belief: you have understood something in the wrong way, and that wrong idea is sitting in your head. It is not a lie you told; it is a mix-up you may not even see yet. English likes the pair under a misapprehension — you acted because you believed the wrong thing. It is a polite, slightly old-fashioned word. In everyday talk people say or I got the wrong idea. Though actually, can also be two people talking past each other; misapprehension points more at one person’s wrong belief. And it is not about the police catching someone, even though apprehend can mean that.
