Minesweeping is the work of finding bombs under the water and taking them away so ships can pass safely. Those bombs are called mines. The ship that does the job is a minesweeper; minesweeping is the job itself — the sweeping. Navies do it after a war, or before other ships enter a harbour. You can also use it as a verb: a crew can be minesweeping a stretch of sea. It is a navy word, heard in news and military talk, not in a shop or a kitchen. Though actually, people sometimes mix the two words up and say minesweeping when they mean the ship. If you mean the vessel, say minesweeper; if you mean the clearing work, this is the word.
