    If something is mimetic, it copies the look or the movement of someone or something else. A dancer’s mimetic gestures might follow a bird or a machine. In biology, a mimetic insect may look like a leaf, or like a more dangerous insect, so it is safer. The word is fairly formal and a little technical. In ordinary talk people usually say mimicking or copying. You will hear mimetic more in art, literature, and science than at the dinner table. It is about the copying itself — the appearance, the movement, the following of a model — not about making a joke of someone.
