Milwaukee is the largest city in the US state of Wisconsin. It sits on Lake Michigan, so it is a port: ships can come in and out, and the water is part of the city's whole shape. People have long known it for beer. German families who settled there built big breweries, and that story still to the name, though actually Milwaukee is a full city — work, sport, neighbourhoods — not a giant pub. It is not the state capital; Madison is. English speakers say mil-WAU-kee. You will meet the name in American news, in baseball (the Milwaukee Brewers), and in talk about the cities around the Great Lakes.
組成Not an English compound. The name perhaps comes from Ojibwe ominowakiing, “gathering place (by the water),” or from an Algonquin word meaning “the good land.”
