Millet is a small round grain from a plant that looks a bit like grass. People cook it as food — porridge, , , and in some places a staple like rice. The seeds are tiny. In ordinary English millet covers several kinds as a group; you do not need the farm names unless you are buying seed. It is a plain food word, not slang and not fancy. On the page it sits next to mill, the building that grinds grain, but this word did not come from that mill. It came into English from French millet, from Latin milium, the old name of the plant. Scholars trace that Latin word back to a root meaning to grind or crush — so the link with grinding is deep and old, not a modern compound like .
