Milan is a large city in the north of Italy. It is not the capital — that is Rome — but it is Italy’s big money and factory city, and one of the world’s fashion cities. Designers show new clothes there; people talk about Milan Fashion Week. The city is also known for a huge cathedral, the Duomo, and for La Scala, a very famous opera house. English speakers say Milan, with the stress on the second part: mi-LAN. Though actually, Italians call the same city Milano; English kept a shorter form that came through French. There are also small towns in the United States named Milan, after the Italian city. Write it with a capital letter: it is a place name, not a common noun.
組成Inherited from Middle English Milane, Melan, from Old English forms such as Mæġelan, Megelan, Mediolana burg, under influence from early French Milan, from Medieval Latin Mediolāna, from Latin Mediolānum. The Italian name Milano is a doublet: the same old name that took a different path. American towns called Milan are typically named after the Italian city.
