    Mightn't is the short form of might not. You use it when something is possible, but you are saying the “not” side: She mightn't come. It mightn't be that simple. Though actually this is much more British and Irish than American. Many American speakers almost never say it, and even in Britain might not in full is always safe. In questions — Mightn't we try again? — it can sound polite and a little old. It is still might, not must: you are talking about chance, not about a rule. Friends and stories use it; a careful American school essay will probably write might not.
