Midwinter is the middle of winter — the dark, cold heart of the season, around the shortest day of the year. People also put it in front of another word: a midwinter night, midwinter sun. Though actually we do not all mean one exact date. Some mean the winter ; some just mean “deep winter,” the worst of the cold. In the north that sits near late December; in the south it sits near June. In everyday talk many speakers just say in the middle of winter or in deep winter. Midwinter sounds a little like a story, a poem, or an old festival — not a word you need for the weather app.
