Midway, with a capital M, is the name of two small islands — an — in the Pacific Ocean, northwest of Honolulu. The United States has used them as a military base. They sit roughly in the middle of the ocean path between North America and Asia, which is why they got the name. In 1942 there was a huge sea and air fight there, the Battle of Midway, in the war in the Pacific; history books often treat that battle as the turning point against Japan in that ocean. You mainly meet the word in war history, in news about the Pacific, or in films about the birds that nest there. This is the place-name. It is not the ordinary word midway, meaning 'halfway,' and it is not the strip of games at a fair.
組成The ordinary English word midway is mid- (middle) + way (path), from Old English midweg. The islands took that name because they sit roughly halfway across the Pacific. Related forms appear in Dutch (midweg).
