Midland means the middle of a country, and in English it most often points at the middle of England — the country around Birmingham, not London, not the North, not the far South West. As a name it is often an adjective: a Midland accent, the old Midland Railway. For the place itself, people more often say the Midlands, with an s and usually with the. Think of it this way: one Midland county, but the whole region as the Midlands. Though actually, you will also meet Midland as a city name in other countries, such as Midland, Texas; that is just a town called Midland, not “the middle of England”. Older writing sometimes uses Midland as a noun for inland country, but will almost always meet it as England’s middle, or as an adjective for things from there.
