Microfilm is a kind of photographic film on which pictures and writing are made very small, so that a huge pile of paper can shrink into a small roll or reel. Libraries, courts, and companies used it to keep newspapers, letters, and official files without filling a whole room. You read it on a machine that magnifies the image. Though actually, it is still film in the old camera sense — a strip of plastic with tiny photographs on it — not a movie you watch for fun, and not a computer file. Next to (a flat sheet), microfilm is often the long roll you wind from one spool to another. It can be a noun (the film itself) or a verb (to microfilm a document = to photograph it onto this film). The word feels archival and a little dated now, because scanning to disc or the cloud has taken its place, but the copies still sit in many libraries.
