A secret photograph of a page, a map, or another document, made so small it looks like a full stop on a piece of paper. Spies used them so a whole set of plans could hide in a letter, under a stamp, or in an everyday object; the other side needed a special lens to blow the picture up and read it. This is the old, famous sense from spy stories and history more than from daily life now — computers and tiny memory chips have mostly taken over that job. As a verb, to microdot something is to shrink it into one of these tiny pictures. It is a book-and-film word, not a word for a of ink on your homework. Though actually, some people also use microdot for a very small tablet of the drug , and some factories use tiny security dots to mark goods. Those are different jobs for the same spelling; this entry is the hidden photograph.
