Microblogging is the activity of sending very short public messages about what you are doing, thinking, or seeing, usually on a social site. The old long blog was like a diary page; this is more like a shout across the room. Twitter made the word famous, but the idea is the same on many apps: a few lines, maybe a photo, posted often. The word itself already feels a bit old. Younger people usually just say they are posting, tweeting, or updating. You still meet it in news and in writing about the internet. It is not a stiff, formal word, but it is a tech-news word more than a kitchen-table word. Though actually, the messages are short; the time people spend on it is often not.
