MI6 is a secret British government service that sends people to other countries to gather hidden political and military information. The letters stand for Military Intelligence, Section Six. James Bond films made the name world-famous, though actually real MI6 work is mostly slow, careful, and quiet — not car chases and tiny guns. The service’s official name is the Secret Intelligence Service, or SIS, but almost everyone, including the papers, still says MI6. Their opposite number at home is MI5. A rough American cousin for the “abroad” job is the CIA; again, that is only a map for , not proof they are the same. We say the letters: M-I-six. Intelligence here means secret news about other countries, not “clever”. You meet the name in spy films, in news about secrets, and in jokes; it is a proper name, not a word you drop into everyday chat for no reason.
