A metro is a city railway made for short, frequent trips, usually running under the streets in tunnels, then coming up where the city thins out. Paris made the word famous: métro is a short form of métropolitain, from a name that meant “the city’s own railway”, itself a translation of London’s Metropolitan Railway, the earliest piece of what became the Underground. London more often says Underground or the Tube; New York says subway. English still uses metro for the same kind of system in many cities. Though actually, the trains are not always under the ground. ’s system is a metro in English, but large parts run above the streets or on raised tracks. People stretch the word to any fast city train with its own tracks, not buses stuck in traffic. It is an everyday, slightly international word; in Taiwan, English speakers often say MRT for the local system.
