    Methuselah is the name of a man in the Bible who, the story says, lived 969 years — longer than anyone else in that book. Because of that, English uses Methuselah to mean “very old,” usually with a smile or a bit of drama. The common phrase is as old as Methuselah, said of a person, an animal, or even a thing that has been around forever. People also call a very old person a Methuselah. It is not a scientific word and not, in kind use, a nasty insult; it is a colourful comparison. You need a little Bible or cultural knowledge to feel why the name means “ancient,” but many speakers still recognise the phrase even if they could not tell you the story.
