Methadone is a strong medical drug in the same broad family as and heroin. Doctors give it to people who are trying to stop heroin: it calms the sick feeling of withdrawal so the person can live more steadily, keep a job, and, often, slowly take less. It is not a vitamin, and it is not a simple cure — it still acts like those other strong pain-family drugs, which is exactly why it can stand in for heroin. People usually take it as a liquid or a tablet at a clinic, because it is tightly controlled. In the news it sits next to words like treatment and replacement. Though actually, the name is close to meth, which in English almost always means , a different drug that speeds you up. Methadone is the slow, clinic medicine; meth is the illegal stimulant. Methadone can still be dangerous if it is mixed with other drugs or taken in the wrong amount.
