A meteorite is the lump of rock or metal that actually reaches the ground after falling from space. Most meteors burn away to nothing; only the rare piece that does not finish burning becomes a meteorite. Museums put them in glass cases. They can look like ugly dark stones until someone tests them. Do not call the streak in the sky a meteorite — that streak is a meteor. The ending -ite here just marks 'the rock/mineral thing connected with a meteor'. It is a science-and-news word, a little more specialist than meteor.
